Business expansion: Engineering and data services provider QC Data has expanded its University City operation by hiring 60 engineers and drafting specialists.

QC Data won a long-term, multimillion-dollar contract to provide services in the Southeastern United States for Telco Engineering Records. The Charlotte office is responsible maintenance; work-order posting, validation, fiber conversion, database cleanup, facility moves and graphics updates.

Stories with benefits: Children age 5-11 will get a chance to boost their confidence and literacy skills by reading to a certified therapy dog during Paws for Reading story time hour at University City Regional Library.

On Campus

Campus portal: The Charlotte Research Institute broke ground last week on a $37 million, four-story research and development building at its main entrance on North Tryon Street.

By 2014, the building is expected to house several research and development teams .

The Ben Craig Center, a UNC Charlotte-backed business incubator, also is expected to move to the building .

Musical performance: Tickets are on sale now for UNC Charlotte Music Department's production of "Songs of the Fisherman," a chamber opera by Timothy Nelson.

The opera will be performed 8 p.m. Jan. 9 in the Belk Theater
