University City residents - particularly those who live southeast of the UNC Charlotte campus - should plan for traffic congestion near the intersection of East W.T. Harris Boulevard and Grier Road beginning Monday.
The Cato Campus of Central Piedmont Community College will close its Grier Road entrance from Monday through March 16. Only the East W.T. Harris Boulevard entrance to the busy campus will be open. That may cause significant backups and delays, especially at peak traffic times, authorities said.
CPCC officials said they must undertake the project now to prevent formation of a dangerous sinkhole. Workers will replace failing underground stormwater piping, and will build a new sidewalk between Grier Road and the main entrance of the Cato Campus.
Grier Road will not be closed, and Charlotte CATS buses No. 3 and No. 29 will continue to stop on Grier Road beside the campus.
Stairs at the corner of Grier and W.T. Harris will be open for pedestrian access. Campus security will offer shuttle assistance as needed for bus riders who cannot navigate the stairs.
