One person was killed and another injured early Friday in a single-vehicle wreck in eastern Union County, the N.C. Highway Patrol says.
The wreck was reported about 3 a.m. on Monroe-Ansonville Road at Austin Chaney Road, north of Wingate. Troopers say the driver of a Dodge Charger apparently lost control of the vehicle, and it went off the road.
After leaving the roadway, the car slid through the parking lot of an auto body shop and slammed into a wrecker. The Dodge then careened another 300 feet into a field before coming to a stop.
NewsChannel 36, the Observer’s news partner, says it was told by investigators that the car’s driver fled the scene and hid in a nearby field. He was found by police about 5 a.m. and taken to a hospital.
