49ers’ great Lew Massey dies

Lew Massey, a high-scoring guard who starred on the Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team during its trips to the 1976 NIT Finals and 1977 NCAA Final Four, died Jan. 24, school officials announced.

Massey – No. 2 in Charlotte scoring all-time list with 2,149 career points – led the 49ers with a 22.5 scoring average in 1976 as they reached the NIT Finals.

In 1977, Massey averaged 19.6 points, second on the team to all-American Cedric Maxwell, as Charlotte made its historic run to the Final Four.

Massey finished his career with a 19.4 scoring average, fourth in school history. He scored in double figures in 103 of his 111 games played, second in school history. He is the 49ers’ all-time leader in field goals made (916). Charlotte Sports Information
