Customers subdued a robbery suspect at a Mooresville convenience store on Tuesday afternoon and held him until police arrived.
At about 4:30 p.m., police received a 911 call from the Kangaroo Express in the 300 block of South Main Street about a robbery in progress.
Officers arrived to find several customers holding suspect Robert Preston Campbell II in the store.
Witnesses told police a man tried to rob a customer, then turned his attention to the clerk behind the counter. The man hit the clerk as the clerk called 911, police said.
Campbell was charged with common law robbery and assault on a female. He was scheduled to be taken Tuesday night from the Mooresville Police Department to the Iredell County jail, where he will see a magistrate and receive bail.
Police were looking for Campbell, 41, of Mooresville, on an outstanding warrant for common law robbery at another Kangaroo Express, in the 500 block of North Main Street on Monday night.
