Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police arrested a driver on Monday accused of hitting and killing a man in west Charlotte and then driving away.

Timothy Malcolm Cherry, 51, died after a Honda Pilot SUV hit him in the 3900 block of Freedom Drive at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

With help from the Lancaster and Chester County, S.C., sheriff’s offices, police arrested 52-year-old Jerry Lynn Helms of Cramerton and charged him with felony hit and run. Helms was jailed on $20,000 bail.

Police said a witness told them a white SUV ran the red light on Ashley Road and turned left onto westbound Freedom Drive before hitting the pedestrian.

The SUV headed south on Interstate 85, police said.
