A driver was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after he was shot while stopped at a light on Albemarle Road in east Charlotte on Wednesday.

The shooter got out of another car that was stopped at the same light at Regal Oaks Drive and fired multiple times into the other car, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

Police released photos of the shooter to the media late Wednesday in hopes someone in the public recognizes him.

The adult male victim was shot at about 3:30 p.m. in the 6900 block of Albemarle Road. Medic took the man to Carolinas Medical Center.

A 911 call alerted police to the shooting.

Police said they will release the victim’s name and age once his family is notified.

CMPD detectives were canvassing the area for witnesses late Wednesday.

The possible suspect is a 20- to 25-year-old black man, about 5-foot-10 and skinny. He left an older model, four-door gray sedan before firing into the other car, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.

Police closed the road in both directions from Winterhaven Drive to East W.T. Harris Boulevard to investigate the shooting.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
