Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested and charged a man in Friday’s hit-and-run of a bicyclist on Central Avenue.

Police arrested Jose Luis Rivera, 43, of Charlotte in the 5800 block of Reddman Road, which is off Albemarle Road in east Charlotte.

Police said they arrested Rivera after responding to a Crime Stoppers tip about a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.

Rivera was charged with felony hit-and-run and filing a false police report. He was jailed with bail set at $25,000 Monday night.

Police said a silver, 1993-2003 model Ford Windstar minivan struck the bicyclist about 5 a.m. Friday in the 5300 block of Central Avenue, near North Sharon Amity Road.

The bicyclist, David Spranger, 51, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in serious condition. Spranger was thrown from the bicycle when the minivan hit it. The minivan stopped briefly, then drove away on North Sharon Amity, police said.
