Teen hid in closet and called 911 when intruder entered. Police were nearby.

A Matthews teen hid in a closet and called 911 after someone broke into her home on Friday, helping police make a quick arrest.

Police ended up charging the suspect, 17-year-old Damien Alexander Denny, in connection with five other house break-ins as well over the past two weeks.

Most of the items stolen in the break-ins were recovered and have been returned to their owners, police said late Friday.

On Friday, officers happened to be nearby on patrol when the teen’s call came in at 11:47 a.m. from a home on Elkins Park Drive, off Margaret Wallace Road. Officers got to the home so quickly they saw the suspect running out the back door.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police established a perimeter and called in canine and helicopter units. Police found and arrested a suspect after a brief search and took him to CMPD’s Independence Division team office. The victim’s name was not released. WSOC-TV said she is 16 years old.
