May 15 update:

The man found dead at the Garden Inn and Suites Monday morning was not the victim of a homicide, the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Tuesday.

Further details are not yet available about the man's death. He has been identified as 57-year-old James Timothy Rowland.

Detectives are investigating a homicide after a man was found unresponsive in a motel room Monday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

He was pronounced dead at the motel, on the 4900 block of Reagan Drive in northeast Charlotte, police said.

The motel, the Garden Inn and Suites, is on a stretch of Reagan Drive that runs alongside Interstate 85, according to the Observer's news partner WBTV. Police said there were signs of a struggle, the TV station reported.
