A man accused of sexually assaulting a UNC Charlotte student was sentenced to up to 12 years in prison Tuesday.

In August 2015, the victim had gone to a friend's apartment to look for a lost credit card, according to a release from the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's office.

The victim's friend wasn't home that day, so her roommate, 27-year-old David Nyeplu, let her into the apartment, according to the release.

Once inside, Nyeplu approached the student from behind, kissed her neck and grabbed her buttocks, the release states. The victim attempted to push Nyeplu away, but forced her to the ground and raped her, according to the release.

A jury found Nyeplu guilty of second-degree rape last week, according to the District Attorney's office.

He will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
