Driver picked up a pair of hitchhikers in NC, then they attacked him, sheriff says

A couple was arrested for pretending to be hitchhikers, and attacking and robbing a man who offered them a ride.

The attack happened early Saturday morning in Rowan County, according to multiple media reports.

The victim was driving a pickup truck when he saw a woman walking along the side of a road and offered her a ride, according to Observer news partner WBTV.

The woman, 32-year-old Trista Donaldson, accepted the offer. But when she went to get into the truck, she also called to a man who came out of the woods nearby, the station reported.

The man, 28-year-old Jeremy Motley, grabbed the driver's keys and threw them in the woods, then started to punch the man, the Salisbury Post reported.

After a struggle, the victim was able to escape and call police, according to multiple media reports.

Motley and Donaldson were arrested Tuesday, according to the Rowan County Sheriff's Office.

Motley was charged with assault, robbery and breaking and entering a vehicle, while Donaldson faces a charge for aiding and abetting.

Donaldson's bail was set at $10,000, while Motley's was set at $15,000, jail records show.
