Statesville man arrested in assault of motorist

A Statesville man was arrested and charged after a motorist was struck in his face, pulled from his car and robbed of $40, police said.

Willie Lereece Gresham, 31, was charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon and simple assault. He was jailed on $100,000 bail.

Police said the motorist stopped for a stop sign at West Sharpe and South Mulberry streets in Statesville when he was assaulted about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Once the victim was pulled from his vehicle, he began fighting the attacker. The attacker pulled out a butcher knife, and the victim returned to his truck to retrieve his crowbar, Statesville police Capt. David Onley said.

The attacker then ran away and was apprehended without incident at a home on Garfield Street, Onley said.
