Charlotte day care worker accused of abusing infant

A Charlotte day care worker was arrested and charged Friday night in the abuse of a 5-month old baby girl who was found unconscious and seriously injured May 6 at the Easter Seals UCP Children’s Center on Marsh Road.

Rebecca Ann Wilt, 45, was charged with child abuse, inflicting serious bodily injury and was taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office for processing into the county jail.

The infant remains in serious condition at Carolinas Medical Center, police said. Police did not specify the infant’s injuries in announcing Wilt’s arrest late Friday.

During the investigation, police said, they obtained information and evidence that identified Wilt as the suspect in the case and signed warrants for her arrest. Police said they located her Friday evening and arrested her without incident.

Wilt was taken to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police headquarters, where she was interviewed by a Crimes Against Children detective.

Police ask that anyone with more information about the incident call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
