A Mecklenburg County sheriff’s deputy was fired after being arrested in neighboring Union County on a DWI charge, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday.
DeWayne Huggins also was charged with “carrying a concealed handgun while ... the person has remaining in his body alcohol previously consumed,” the sheriff’s office said.
Huggins was off-duty driving his personal vehicle when he was arrested just after midnight Friday, according to the news release. The handgun was “personally owned” and not a “service weapon” issued by the sheriff’s office, the news release said.
Huggins joined the sheriff’s office in 2009 and most recently worked in the arrest processing center.
