A Union County woman is accused of trying to murder a man by running him down with a U-Haul truck, according to investigators in North Carolina.

Brittney Carnevale, 34, of Monroe, was arrested June 3 and charged with attempted felony first degree murder and felony larceny of a motor vehicle, a warrant reports. That vehicle was a $30,000 U-Haul, officials said.

The assault is alleged to have happened Dec. 17, court records show.

“Detectives ... recently concluded an investigation into a violent assault involving a male victim who sustained severe injuries after being struck by a U-Haul truck,” the Union County Sheriff’s Office said in a June 8 news release.

“During the investigation, detectives developed evidence indicating that Brittney Carnevale allegedly struck the male with the truck trapping him underneath the vehicle. The victim was transported to a local emergency department for treatment before being airlifted to another hospital, where he underwent extensive medical treatment due to the severity of his injuries.”

Carnevale and the man were acquaintances, Lt. Matt Winfrey said in a phone call Tuesday. The pair were together when Carnevale rented the U-Haul. It’s not clear what led to her running the man over, but she kept the rental truck after, Winfrey said.

The man was unable to file a police report until recently due to the accident and then being arrested on an unrelated charge after he was release from the hospital, Winfrey said. The rental company filed a stolen vehicle report. It’s unclear if the vehicle was ever recovered, Winfrey said.

A warrant reports the assault was carried out “with malice aforethought.”

“Carnevale appeared before a judicial official, who ordered that she be held without bond. She remains in custody at the Union County Detention Center,” the sheriff’s office said.

Monroe is about a 25-mile drive southeast from uptown Charlotte.
