Report: Rock Hill man assaults mom with Chia Pet

A Rock Hill man is accused of throwing a Chia Pet potted plant at his mother and spitting in her face, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Justin Tyler Russell, 22, of Forest Road was charged with third-degree assault and battery and placed in the York County detention center, where he remained Wednesday under $1,652 bond.

Deputies met with Russell’s mother at a home on Saluda Road on Monday afternoon, according to a sheriff’s report. She told them she went there because she is “afraid of her son.”

The woman said she was at the Forest Road house picking up some items to bake a cake, and while there, Russell came into the kitchen and began yelling at her, deputies said. Russell picked up a Chia Pet potted plant and threw it at her, then tore a bag of flour and spilled it on the floor, the report states.

Russell was not at the home by the time his mother went back with deputies. They found pieces of the broken Chia Pet in the kitchen trash can and on the floor, the report states. The victim had a bruise and swelling on her right elbow where the plant hit her.

The woman told deputies Russell spat in her face twice on Sunday, and that she is afraid to stay in her home because of him.
