A Huntersville doctor has been arrested on child pornography charges.
Police on Oct. 1 charged Dr. David Shope, 41, with two counts each of second-degree and third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, Mecklenburg County jail records show.
Shope is free on $120,000 bail.
Media outlets reported that Shope’s arrest followed an eight-month investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Cyber Crimes Unit and involved pornography over the Internet.
Shope is a hematologist-oncologist who worked at Southern Oncology Specialists in Huntersville.
It wasn’t clear Thursday whether he still practices there. A woman who answered the phone at the practice Thursday morning hung up on an Observer reporter.
Shope’s lawyer, Ron Frey, issued a statement in Shope’s behalf.
“Dr. Shope has been devoted to the service of others throughout his career in the medical profession,” the statement said. “There is no allegation of any wrongdoing with respect to his position as a physician. We look forward to addressing this matter in court.”
Novant Health issued a statement after Shope’s arrest.
“While not employed by Novant Health, Dr. David Shope does have hospital privileges at two of our hospitals,” the statement said. “Novant Health takes this matter seriously and has worked with medical staff leadership to take all appropriate steps to protect our patients.”
