A pedestrian killed by a hit-and-run driver on Central Avenue early Monday has been identified as 51-year-old Jose Rivera Gutierrez, police said Thursday.
Police on Monday arrested and charged Luis Fernando Perez-Ramirez, 34, with driving while impaired, felony death by vehicle and felony hit and run.
Shortly after the crash, Perez-Ramirez called 911 to report that someone had moved his van from its parking space in the 3400 block of North Sharon Amity Road, police said.
Officers arrived but couldn’t get anyone to come to the door. They found a Honda van with extensive damage parked at the building next door. The van was taken to police headquarters for processing.
Police, meanwhile, were able to contact Perez-Ramirez in his apartment, and he agreed to go to police headquarters to speak to detectives. He was interviewed and charged.
Gutierrez was killed in the 4900 block of Central Avenue. Police found him unresponsive in the median. Medic arrived and pronounced him dead.
Police said speed and alcohol impairment appeared to contribute to the crash.
Gutierrez was crossing Central Avenue near the entrance to an apartment complex. The area was well lighted but has no marked crosswalk.
