Newton man wanted after woman’s shooting

Police are looking for an armed man who shot a 24-year-old woman in Hickory early Sunday.

Madison Edward Merola, 24, of Newton is suspected of attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Officers were called around 1:55 a.m. to a location near Third Street NW and First Avenue NW. They found a woman on the ground with a gunshot wound, according to a report from the Hickory Police Department.

Helen Baumer, 24, of Hickory was in critical condition after being taken to a hospital. A 22-year-old man who was at the scene told police Merola confronted them with a handgun. No details were provided about the reason for the shooting.

Merola has drug-related misdemeanor and felony convictions dating back to 2009 in Lincoln and Catawba counties, according to the N.C. Department of Public Safety.

He was convicted in Catawba County in April 2012 of a felony charge of maintaining a place for controlled substances. He was placed on probation.
