Police are trying to determine what happened to a man whose dead body was found behind a building in west Charlotte.

Around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, police received a call about a person down on Chastain Avenue near where Woodlawn Road meets Interstate 77.

When officers responded, they located a body behind the building. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Investigators hadn’t released the man’s name Sunday because they hadn’t located his family. They also have not specified the type of trauma the man went through before he was killed.

No one has been arrested in the killing, which officers called a homicide. Detectives in the homicide and assault with a deadly weapon units were canvassing the neighborhood looking for witnesses and clues. Crime scene technicians also responded to the scene to process evidence.

The body was found in the Woodlawn Green business park, a block-long strip mall behind a Best Western Inn and within view of the light-rail tracks.

Officers had cleared the scene by Sunday evening. The only signs of their earlier presence were a few strips of crime scene tape tied to a street sign.

Police encouraged anyone with information about the killing to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. Tipsters are eligible for a reward for information that leads to an arrest.
