SUV driver strikes, kills injured motorcyclist, then drives away

N.C. Highway Patrol troopers were still searching late Sunday for the driver of an SUV who struck and killed a motorcyclist who had just been in a wreck.

The series of wrecks happened about 4 a.m. on Interstate 85 near North Graham Street. A man and a woman riding a motorcycle had crashed and were thrown from the bike. The woman was helped out of the road by a passerby, but before the man could get out of the road, he was struck by an older model, dark SUV, troopers say.

The driver of the SUV drove away. The man and woman were both taken to a nearby hospital, where the man died.

The crash remained under investigation late Sunday. Authorities have not identified the man and woman involved in the crash.

Video from WBTV, the Observer’s news partner, showed a heavy police presence along the dark highway early Sunday. The wreckage has been cleared up and the road is reopened.
