Driver dies after car crashes during police pursuit on West Sugar Creek Road

An 18-year-old carjacker died after his car went airborne and crashed into a pole while speeding from police on West Sugar Creek Road Thursday morning.

Armed with a knife, Kahmal Williams Darby stole a black 2006 Volvo S60 in northwest Charlotte shortly after 5 a.m, police said.

Officers spotted the car about four hours later, according to CMPD. That’s when Darby sped off, eventually losing control and smashing into a utility pole.

The car ended up in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant. Darby died at the scene, according to Medic.

The wreck closed West Sugar Creek Road near Reagan Drive for several hours.

Shelton Morris was filling his car with gas at a Raceway station across the street from where the Volvo landed. He said the car had gone airborne 60 or 70 feet, “like what you see in the movies.”

He said he saw the car flipping over and the driver being ejected at the same time.

CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and Internal Affairs Bureau are investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
