A 12-year-old died in a Gaston County wreck on Interstate 85 Friday afternoon, despite the frantic efforts of paramedics, who performed CPR on the side of the highway.
Authorities haven’t released the name of the teen killed in the 1 p.m. crash. The driver of the tractor trailer, Gary Alphonso Thomas, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. He is being held in Gaston County jail with bail set at $1 million.
According to photos from the scene, the box truck the teen was riding in rear-ended a tractor-trailer. WSOC-TV reported that the larger truck’s driver pulled over on the side of the highway to make a phone call.
It was unclear which department was leading the investigation into the crash.
