A Union County man was arrested this week after a sheriff’s deputy’s dog sniffed out methamphetamine, cocaine and illegal hallucinogenic mushrooms in his car, authorities said.

Michael Patrick Westmoreland, 51, of Indian Trail, was arrested after a routine traffic stop on Old Charlotte Highway near John Moore Road in Monroe Tuesday afternoon, the Union County Sheriff’s Office said.

Westmoreland was charged with felony possession of cocaine, felony possession of a schedule I controlled substance, trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana paraphernalia. He was jailed on $200,000 bail.

Westmoreland has criminal convictions dating to 1985, the sheriff’s office said, including felony drug convictions in New Hanover County and several convictions in Union County. Westmoreland also has felony drug charges pending from an arrest in December.
