Police: Man fires shots at CMPD officers

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a man fired shots at officers Friday morning at an apartment complex off East Independence Boulevard.

No officers were struck by gunfire, and no injuries were reported. The alleged shooter was taken into custody, police say.

According to police, officers from the Independence Division arrived about 9:30 a.m. to talk to occupants at an apartment in the 1800 block of Village Lake Drive, between Independence Boulevard and Monroe Road, east of Harris Boulevard.

While officers were inside the residence, a man ran upstairs and then began shooting at the officers, police said. Investigators say the man then jumped from a second-story window and ran.

Police called in additional units, including a SWAT team, but they found the suspect a short time later and took him into custody. Investigators say they found a firearm near the scene.

Several people were taken to police headquarters for questioning, officers said.

It is not clear why police went to the residence initially, or whether CMPD officers fired any shots.

Police had not released the name of the suspect as of late Friday afternoon.
