West Charlotte shootings leave 1 dead early Monday

Two people were shot – and one of them was killed – in separate shootings Monday within a block of each other in west Charlotte.

One man died in an apparent domestic-related shooting early Monday on Morning Drive near West Boulevard, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Police responded to a call of an attempted break-in about 4:30 a.m. in the 3100 block and found a man with a gunshot wound on the steps of the home.

Medic pronounced the person dead at the scene, and police said they will release his name after notifying his family.

The person who called for help said a boyfriend of a resident was attempting to break in through the front door, police said. Officers interviewed family members who were inside the home at the time of the shooting and canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses.

Seven hours later, police responded to a call of a gunshot victim just a block from the earlier shooting.

The second shooting happened in the Arbor Glen Apartments off Clanton Road. Police were called out at 11:20 a.m., and one person was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police released no details about the shooting, including whether it was related to the earlier one.

Anyone with information is asked to call 704-432-TIPS (8477) and speak to a homicide unit detective. Staff photographer Davie Hinshaw contributed.
