Al Brewer hadn’t been heard from for days in March before a friend went by his house and found his body lying on the floor, according to a recording of a 911 call obtained by the Observer.
The caller, whose name is redacted on the recording, told a dispatcher that he’d been unsuccessfully trying to reach Brewer by phone since March 13. The caller said he went by the house to check on Brewer and found the door unlocked and open.
“I walked in, the lights were off and I saw him laying on the floor,” the caller said. “I thought he was alive.”
Police were called to the home in the 1000 block of North Sharon Amity Road about 3 p.m. March 18. Police have called Brewer’s death a homicide. No one has been arrested in connection with it.

While officers were in the house, they reported finding “suspicious items” that appeared to be homemade explosive devices.
Police evacuated nearby homes and called in the bomb squad. No one was injured by the explosives.
Friends of Brewer told the Observer that one of Brewer’s hobbies was constructing explosive devices and setting them off in the woods near his home.
Police haven’t said whether Brewer or the devices ever posed a danger to the public. They told the Observer other details in the case were part of the ongoing investigation and not public information.
