Charlotte fatal shooting suspect surrenders to SWAT team

A Charlotte man suspected of fatally shooting a woman surrendered to a SWAT team Saturday afternoon after barricading himself in his home.

About 1:25 p.m., Charlotte Mecklenburg police received a call that someone had been shot in the 3100 block of Seymour Drive in west Charlotte, not far from the airport.

Officers found Diane Burns, 51, lying in the street in front of a house with an apparent gunshot wound, according to a press release. Medic took her to Carolinas Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.

While officers were there, Joe Willie Maddox, 70, barricaded himself inside his house on Seymour, and a SWAT team was dispatched. When the team arrived, he surrendered and was arrested without incident. Detectives canvassed the neighborhood in search of witnesses.

Police said Burns and Maddox knew each other and that the shooting was not random. They did not specify how the two knew each other. Maddox was charged with murder and taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call 704-432-8477 or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
