Rowan County driver charged after deputies find drugs hidden in vehicle

Authorities arrested a Rowan County driver after finding drugs hidden in his vehicle.

Sheriff’s investigators were conducting a traffic checkpoint on White Farm Road shortly after midnight Wednesday when deputies noticed a vehicle make an abrupt turn onto Deer Brook Drive without using a turn signal.

Deputies eventually stopped the vehicle at the Volonte Motel on U.S. 601 in Salisbury.

Driver Wayne Lee Morrison II, 37, consented to a search of his vehicle, and deputies found two containers with 94 hydrocodone tablets hidden in a space below the center console, authorities said. The tablets weighed 41 grams.

Morrison was charged with two counts of trafficking more than 28 grams of heroin/opium and one count of possessing with intent to sell or deliver a Schedule III controlled substance.

He also was charged with interfering with a utility meter (Piedmont Natural Gas). That charge dealt with an outstanding warrant issued on Aug. 14, 2013.

Morrison’s bond was set at $150,500, and he was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center pending a first court appearance.
