One man was arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly leading troopers on a chase that ended with a crash in north Charlotte.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said Anthony Antoine Byers, 38, of Charlotte, was arrested after the car he was driving slammed into a power pole on North Tryon Street about 8:15 a.m.
Authorities said troopers had tried to stop the blue Suzuki on southbound Interstate 85 because of reckless driving.
The driver of the Suzuki, identified by troopers as Byers, exited I-85 and got onto North Tryon Street. The pursuit ended when the car crashed in front of the Walmart store, just north of University City Boulevard.
Byers was not seriously hurt, and no other motorists were injured.
Troopers said Byers tried to flee but was caught a few minutes later.
Byers was taken to Mecklenburg jail, but later released on a $9,500 bond. He was charged with driving while impaired, fleeing to elude arrest, driving with a revoked license, speeding, aggressive driving and resisting a public officer.
North Tryon Street was closed for about an hour after the incident. Police dogs arrived on the scene about 9:15 a.m. and were seen searching the car. The Observer’s Davie Hinshaw and Cleve R. Wootson Jr. contributed.
