CMPD charges two in early morning vehicle break-in case

Police have charged two Charlotte men in connection with a series of early morning vehicle break-ins, officials said.

Deante Brown, 22, and Laquentin Winchester, 21, were arrested Friday on numerous charges following an investigation of events from earlier that morning, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Around 2:38 a.m., police were called to the 5200 block of McAlpine Glen Drive in regards to two suspects breaking into multiple vehicles in a parking lot, police said.

The 911 caller gave a description of the suspect to dispatchers and when officers arrived, a marked patrol car was side-swiped by the suspects’ vehicle. The suspects then drove away but crashed nearby, police said.

The suspects ran from the damaged vehicle and officers set up a perimeter in the area. CMPD’s K9 unit helped locate both suspects, along with two firearms, officials said.

Both men were interviewed and police said that Winchester had stolen a 2001 Dodge Caravan on Keyway Boulevard before going to a number of places with Brown to break into vehicles.

Brown was charged with five counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle and resist, obstruct and delay. Winchester was charged with nine counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, larceny of a motor vehicle, two counts of hit and run and resist, obstruct and delay, police said.

Winchester was also wanted by CMPD on outstanding warrants for breaking and entering of motor vehicles, officials said.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges could be pending, according to police. The stolen property was recovered and both men taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
