Arrest made in northwest Charlotte shooting death

Police say they have arrested a man in a teen-on-teen killing Tuesday afternoon in northwest Charlotte.

Deshawn Darnell McDowell, 19, of Charlotte, was arrested in connection with the death of Ajewan Mikal Jones, 18, police said. According to investigators, Jones was fatally wounded about 2 p.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of Beatties Ford Road, in the University Park area near LaSalle Street.

Jones was taken by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said McDowell was found by officers a short time after the shooting and was charged after being questioned by Homicide detectives. According to police, McDowell was charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and carrying a concealed weapon.

Investigators have not said what might have led to the shooting. Both McDowell and Jones had lengthy arrest records. McDowell’s arrests included assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, robbery, and breaking and entering.
