Police: Charlotte woman took $115,000 from 91-year-old she was caring for

Police have accused a Charlotte woman of pilfering more than $115,000 from an elderly woman she was caring for.

Detectives arrested Cindy Starnes Hudson, 56, late last week and charged her with exploitation of an elder/disabled adult. The victim was 91 years old, according to a police report.

Investigators said Hudson was hired in mid-2011 to be the long-term caregiver for the woman. She served in that role between July 2011 and December 2013.

Soon after being hired, police said, Hudson began handling the victim’s finances and bank accounts. Investigators said Hudson began handing checks to the victim to sign, saying the checks were payments for bills that were due.

Last December, according to detectives, friends of the victim became suspicious when Hudson was granted power of attorney for the woman. The friends reviewed the victim’s bank accounts and credit card statements and discovered Hudson was taking money for personal use and for her friends, police said.

Detectives said that between July 2011 and January 2014, the victim suffered a financial loss of more than $115,000.

Police ask that anyone with information in the case contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or http://charlottecrimestoppers.com.
