Father saves Lincoln youth with CPR after boy was hanged by basketball goal

A 10-year-old boy was recovering Monday in a Charlotte hospital after he accidentally came close to hanging himself in a basketball hoop in his yard.

Authorities said the boy’s father helped save his life.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office deputies said the boy was outside playing basketball Sunday morning at a home a few miles south of Lincolnton. When his grandmother looked outside, she saw the boy hanging from the basketball goal’s netting. The basketball hoop was set for about 5 feet off the ground, deputies said.

Investigators said the boy’s 45-year-old father, identified as William Swink, ran outside, cut away the netting, and began CPR. The victim, whose name has not been released, was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln and then to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A spokesman for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said Monday that the boy was alert and in stable condition.
