Head of honor statue reported found in Waxhaw

The ceramic statue of a soldier at a Waxhaw memorial wall that was reported missing was confirmed stolen, and its head was retrieved by police, according to the caretaker of the space.

Karen Johnson, who oversees the Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor in Waxhaw for American Legion Post 208, said Saturday that somebody found the head and reported it to police. Police were able to retrieve it, she said.

Johnson said she couldn’t talk specifics because police are investigating. A Waxhaw Police Department lieutenant said Saturday that the person authorized to speak on the matter wouldn't be available until Monday.

Johnson said the incident generated an outpouring of concern and well wishes from the community. The 18-inch statue was part of the decade-old honor wall. One side of the statue under the soldier reads “Respect Our Military.”

“People were very upset that someone would be disrespectful” to the honor wall, which includes names of military members still in service, she said. “A lot of people never really...stopped to think what it meant until the statue was taken.”
