N.C. cousins captured after overpowering detective

Two cousins were in police custody Wednesday after they allegedly overpowered an Avery County law enforcement officer Tuesday afternoon and stole his truck and handgun.

Avery County authorities said the suspects – Calvin Metcalf, 20, of Bakersville, and Phillip Metcalf, 25, of Spruce Pine – were arrested in Gordon County, Ga. That is in the northern part of the state, between Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Metcalfs had been arrested July 22 in McDowell County in connection with a restaurant break-in two days earlier. On Tuesday afternoon, an Avery County sheriff’s detective took the two men to western Avery County as part of an investigation there.

Authorities said that at about 4:15 p.m., the two men overpowered the detective. They drove off in the officer’s county-owned truck. The detective was not seriously injured, according to investigators.

Officials in McDowell and Avery counties had classified the two men as dangerous.
