Six-month investigation in Lincoln County leads to drug arrest

A six-month drug investigation ended this week when Lincoln County sheriff’s narcotics investigators chased and arrested a Cleveland County man.

Investigators learned that a man from outside Lincoln County was frequenting an apartment complex on Gaston Street in Lincolnton, where he was suspected of taking orders for drugs. The man then met the buyers at business parking lots to turn over drugs and collect money, investigators said.

On Thursday, investigators in an unmarked car tried to stop the man, but he sped away before crashing the car into a fence, jumping from the car and trying to run away. As he tried to run from investigators, the man dropped a baggie of cocaine beside the car, authorities said.

Kelan Debarge Brown, 29, of Shelby was charged with one felony count each of possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for a controlled substance and speeding to elude arrest. He also was charged with driving while license revoked, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance schedule VI. Brown was taken to jail under an $18,000 secured bond.

Investigators in part credited the arrest to calls to the sheriff’s Drug Tip Line. Anyone with information on the sale of illegal drugs is asked to call 704-736-8422.
