One dead in Hickory Grove murder-attempted suicide, police say

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a homicide that took place early Sunday morning in the Hickory Grove neighborhood.

Hickory Grove Division patrol officers responded to a call about a suicide threat from the 6400 block of Woodbend Drive at 3 a.m., according to the police report. Officers found a man with what appeared to be self-inflicted knife wounds. Also in the apartment was the body of a woman, Maria Rocha, 43, who died from apparent knife wounds.

The man, Miguel A. Hernandez, 45, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators believe it was a murder-attempted-suicide incident and that the two individuals were involved in a domestic relationship.

Hernandez is in stable condition at Carolinas Medical Center. Upon his release, he will be transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with murder.
