Speed was a factor in a northwest Charlotte crash Sunday afternoon that left a woman dead, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
Investigators identified the dead woman as Melanie Scott Felts, 32, of Charlotte.
The crash happened around 2 p.m. at 3514 Kelly Road. That’s near where Interstate 485 meets Brookshire Boulevard.
Felts was driving a 1994 Volvo station wagon. As she turned onto Kelly Road, police said, the station wagon ran off the side of the street. The car sideswiped a tree, struck a mailbox, then hit a large tree head-on and caught fire.

Paramedics pronounced Felts dead at the scene.
Investigators say Felts was speeding, but they don’t know whether alcohol was also a factor in the crash.
This crash is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department.
