2 charged in theft of $245,000 worth of farm equipment

Two western Stanly County men have been charged in the theft of farm equipment worth nearly a quarter of a million dollars, the sheriff’s office said.

The two were arrested Monday and the equipment – a John Deere 4455 tractor and a feed trailer – were recovered, according to deputies.

Charged in the case were Caleb Shane Whitley, 39, of Stanfield, and Matthew Lane Stegall, 22, of Oakboro. Each was charged with conspiracy to commit a felony and felony larceny.

Investigators said the tractor and trailer were reported stolen Sept. 1 from a farm near Aquadale, in the southern part of the county. The equipment was found in western Stanly County, authorities said. Investigators said the equipment had a total value of $245,000.

Whitley had unrelated pending charges and was jailed under $150,000 bond, deputies said. Stegall was jailed under $10,000 bond.
