Burke man sentenced for having gun on college property

A Burke County man has been sentenced to at least two years in prison after being convicted of taking a firearm onto a college campus, prosecutors say.

Joshua Daniel Stilwell, 24, of Connelly Springs, was convicted last week of three felonies – attempted trafficking in opium/heroin, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and possession of a gun on educational property.

Stilwell was sentenced to between 24 and 36 months in prison, authorities said.

According to court records, an off-duty Catawba County sheriff’s deputy noticed a vehicle in the parking lot of Catawba Valley Community College in August 2012 and saw weapons in the vehicle. The deputy learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen and that the defendant had drugs in his possession, authorities said.
