Mooresville coach resigns amid police investigation

A Mooresville Middle School coach resigned Tuesday as police investigate whether undisclosed allegations against him constitute criminal activity.

Chip Pickard of Mooresville was a physical education teacher and seventh-grade football and boys’ basketball coach at Mooresville Middle prior to his resignation earlier this week, officials said.

Police and school district officials have not said what the nature of the allegations are, or whether Pickard’s resignation is connected to the allegations.

Tanae McLean, director of public information for Mooresville Graded School District, confirmed Friday that Pickard had worked for the district the past four years.

Citing state personnel laws, McLean could not say whether Pickard‘s resignation is a result of the investigation.

Mooresville Police Department Major Ron Chilton said investigators filed a report Monday after the “School system asked us to look into some activity and look to see if it rises to a level of criminal activity or not.”

No charges had been filed against Pickard Friday morning.

“We’re very early in the investigative process and it would be premature to say anything at this time,” Chilton said.
