Man charged in attempted rape of elderly Charlotte woman

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Friday arrested a man in the attempted rape of an elderly woman in her home in the 2700 block of Haverford Place, off South Boulevard near Sedgefield Park.

Police charged Kenneth Earl Sumpter Jr., 23, with second-degree kidnapping, second-degree attempted rape and second-degree attempted sex offense. He was jailed under a $125,000 bond.

At about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, patrol officers responded to a physical assault call for service and spoke with an elderly woman who said she’d allowed a man into her home. According to a probable cause affidavit, the man then grabbed the woman by her arms and dragged her into her bedroom.

The man threw the woman onto the floor and tried to sexually assault her, according to the police affidavit. But the woman fought off her attacker by screaming and scratching the man, the affidavit states.

The attacker eventually got up and left through a back door but left his cellphone in the home, according to the affidavit.

Sumpter surrendered without incident on Friday, police said.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 704-334-1600.
