Belmont police respond to bomb threat

Belmont police closed portions of several streets in the downtown district late Sunday night after someone reported a bomb was in a car, authorities said.

Police did not provide details, but officers shut down a number of streets in an area around Main Street about 11 p.m. Sunday. According to initial reports, the threat was phoned in about 9:45 p.m.

Some limited evacuations of nearby businesses were reported. WBTV, the Observer’s media partner, reported a bomb squad was called in.

Streets were open again Monday morning, and there was no report of any explosion. Steve Lyttle
