Suspect named in Kannapolis shooting, attempted robbery

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office is looking for the suspect they say shot a man during an attempted robbery earlier this week.

Gerrell McCrae, 31, has been added to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Most Wanted List, and detectives said they will charge him with attempted murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Deputies were called to the Rowan Regional Medical Center on Monday after Scott Shoaf, 36, was brought in with a gunshot wound, the sheriff’s office said.

Shoaf was on Weddington Avenue when a man tried to rob him at gunpoint. Shoaf was shot twice as he tried to run, officials said, noting one of the wounds was life-threatening and required surgery at Baptist Hospital.

McCrae is also wanted in Cabarrus County on assault charges and firearm by felon.

Anyone with information about McCrae or the investigation are asked to call Detective Lt. Chad Moose at 704-216-8687, Detective Rodney Mahaley at 704-216-8711, or Rowan County Crime Stoppers at 866-639-5245.
