Ex-Mooresville Middle teacher arrested

A Mooresville Middle School coach and teacher who resigned last month was arrested Tuesday night and charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child, authorities say.

Clarence Earl “Chip” Pickard III, 28, of Mooresville, turned himself in to the Iredell County Jail after warrants were issued for his arrest, Mooresville police said. Pickard was released later on $50,000 bond, police said.

The charges involve Pickard’s behavior with a student.

Mooresville police Chief Carl Robbins said investigators don’t believe Pickard had any physical contact with the student. Rather, he said, it was related to text messages.

“Throughout this investigation, we have found no evidence of physical contact between Pickard and any student,” Robbins said. “The charges are all related to inappropriate text messaging between Jan. 1 and Sept. 8 of this year.”

Robbins said police are continuing to investigate the case.

Pickard resigned Sept. 9, according to school officials. He taught physical education at the school and coached seventh-grade football and boys’ basketball.
