Police: Woman in Charlotte crash died of medical condition

Police believe a woman found dead after a single-car crash on Wendover Road died of natural causes before her car went across four lanes of traffic and collided with a tree.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police identified the woman as Benita Diane Kelly. Her 2002 Pontiac Grand Am drove off Wendover Road about 11 a.m. Sunday and struck a tree between Monroe Road and Independence Boulevard. Both airbags deployed, but there was no sign that Kelly ever hit the brakes before the crash.

Officers found Kelly unresponsive in the driver’s seat. She was still wearing her seat belt and had no signs of trauma. She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center and pronounced dead about an hour after the crash.

“It is believed that the decedent had suffered from a medical condition which caused her to run off the road,” police said in a statement. Cleve R. Wootson Jr.
