Gastonia police are asking the public’s help in learning what caused a man to crash on his moped Sunday evening.
The crash left the victim, 61-year-old Verne Edward Williamson, with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Investigators said they were called shortly after 6:30 p.m. Sunday to North York Street near Rankin Avenue, where they found Williamson unconscious and having trouble breathing. Williamson was taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, police said.
Witnesses told police that Williamson was driving south on North York Street when he went left of center, then veered back to the right and went off the road. Williamson’s vehicle struck the curb and a street sign, and he was thrown from the moped.
