Police: One man dead in single-vehicle north Charlotte crash

A Charlotte man is dead after his car crashed into a tree early Sunday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.

At 6:33 a.m., CMPD responded to a single vehicle crash in the 1400 block of Peachtree Road near Sunset Road in north Charlotte. Police found a 1995 Nissan Maxima that had struck a tree and had caught on fire.

The officer who arrived first tried to extinguish the fire and reach the driver, later identified as Rudy Charles Zekou, 43.

TThe Long Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Medic also arrived to help but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the Nissan was traveling northeast on Peachtree Road when it ran off the right side of the road in the 1400 block. The vehicle struck a tree head-on. Zekou was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Police said that at this time, it is unknown if alcohol was a contributing circumstance for this crash. although speed appears to be a contributing circumstance.
